自由研究セミナー： Unix Workstations を使おう

講義要綱

このセミナーでは Unix workstation を使いながら，ソフト，ハード両 面から Unix workstation とその上のアプリケーションの仕組みを理解 することを目的とする．「習うより慣れろ」 という考え方で運営する がただ技術を学ぶ教習所ではない．常に裏で何がおきているのか，どう してこのようにアレンジされているのかということを考える． まず次のような内容から始める： ユーザーから管理者の側面へ，stand-alone としての利用から network 利用へ，といった方向でセミナーを進める． 更にトピック的に Unix の歴史，freeware/shareware, copyright/copyleft, Linux, 暗号化などを扱う． Unix を知っていることは仮定しないが，．コンピューターを使ってい る経験は必要であろう．例えばキーボードは難なくタイプできると仮定 する． Unix に関してのセミナーではあるが，もっと一般的なコンピューター の理解を目指す．Unix の歴史は古いが，この世の標準として残るかは 必ずしも明らかではない．しかし，Unix の良いところは必ず残ってい く．それだけにどのような仕組みになっているのか，なぜそのように振 舞うのかを常に考えて欲しい． インフォーマルな形式で学生諸君も発表，質問を行なうことにより積極 的にセミナーに参加して欲しい．特に後半は学生諸君の希望も採り入れ た内容にしていきたいのでアイディアをどんどん出してもらいたい．数 十分で終るような簡単な email 提出のレポートが毎回と長めのレポー トが数回あると思って欲しい．

初心者用 Unix books の例

２冊とも手軽で読みやすそう．基礎的なことをカヴァー．後は使いなが ら online manual を読むか，より詳しい本を読めば良いでしょう． 初心者からでも読めて全体的にカヴァーしている本． 量は多い．評判良い．

自分の PC で Unix したい人

Linux (free unix の人気のある一種) の install の仕方，使い方． Linux 入門の方は個々の application の使い方も含んでいる．２冊と も Linux を載せた CDROM がついている．popular な free unix には FreeBSD もある． Linux, FreeBSD ともに書籍が時々刻々と増えているので書店で自分に あった CD つきの本を買うと良いであろう．install は CD の方が network traffic, 更にもっと大事なことに自分の時間を節約するとい う面で良い．

間違えても絶対に「御気楽極楽インストール」は買わないように．free software の概念を全く理解していないし，この本を買っての install 失敗談には事欠かない．unix user 付録も巷では収録の仕方が荒っぽ過 ぎるとの声が多いいので初心者は避けた方が良いであろう．
この home page も Linux machine によって維持されている．

面白い本 ＝ 私の大好きな本 (和訳あるはず)

あと全体的に O'Reilly & Associates の Nutshell Series の本は 技術的なことを手短に最初より説明してあるので，詳しく知りたい人には 強く推薦．例えば workstations の管理者など向け． 訳書はシリーズ内の本によって出版者が違う (アスキー，オーム社，...) シリーズ内で読んでおもろい本 (eg. "PGP: Pretty good privacy", "High performance computing" など) と百科辞典的な本 ("MH", "Sendmail" など) がある．実用的．
